Gas Alumni 2017 Report

By Howard C Smith, , P. Eng, GPAC GAS alumni representative

The primary role of the GAS alumni representative on the GPAC Board is to act as the interface between the board, the Association, alumni members, and past presidents.  It is currently a non-voting position although this is due to change to full “director status.” Experience gained from serving previously on the CGPA/CGPSA board is used to provide commentary, advice and guidance to the board as is appropriate.

Gas alumni membership for 2017 stands at a disappointing 10, as it was the previous year.  It is only $9.45/year for retired GPAC members!

This year’s major undertaking year was to update the past president’s database.  While many revisions and updates were made, this activity will continue to be work in progress.  There are many past presidents still to locate since members are retiring and not necessarily providing their forwarding information.  Once they move away they become difficult to trace.

Following a request for members to update their information, several of much appreciated responses were received containing interesting snippets of history from the CGPA, CGPSA, and GPAC. A tremendous amount of anecdotal material and personal history exists with “our founding fathers and mothers” and their successors from all three organizations so it has been proposed to gather, register and document this information for posterity.  If members would each like to contribute of their memories, anecdotes, and other relevant information we would be delighted to receive it for inclusion in an archive for posterity.

Another activity is to organize the Past Presidents and Directors Annual Golf Tournament, held this June at Lynx Ridge Golf Club; only this year we hosted eight golfers compared to 15 in 2016.  The date for 2018 has been moved back to July and we do hope more are able to attend on Monday, July 23 – please reserve the date in your calendars.  With a slightly improved economy and oil price and all the additional taxes being thrown our way, the event will provide a little light relief while presenting an ideal opportunity to enjoy each other’s company while reflecting on memories and experiences associated with time spent in the industry and GPAC, in particular.

Details and registration will be sent out in April.

Another project as work in progress is the revision to, and updating of, the Board Procedures Manual.   Completion will be early in the New Year.

We are looking forward to 2018 in the hope to be able to increase our membership and participation.
