Nsolv Corporation announced in early March, 2017 it had completed the optimization phase of its pilot oil sands project near Fort McKay, AB three years after it launched (January, 2014) and achieved exceptional results. It has produced more than 125,000 barrels of oil, generated very little greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, used no water, and experienced no health, safety or environmental (HSE) incidents.
“I believe that our results are shifting the paradigm for the future of the oil sands industry,” says Joe Kuhach, Nsolv’s CEO. “Our technology extracts heavy oil while protecting the environment and providing economic benefits to industry and government, even when prices are low.” He claims the pilot demonstrates that a commercial-scale project can generate a higher return on investment (ROI) due to lower capital and operating costs. It also produces a partially upgraded, higher-quality oil product at rates comparable to steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) methods.
Nsolv is a privately-owned Canadian clean-tech energy company devoted to solving the operational and environmental challenges of heavy oil extraction. It has a patented warm solvent technology for in situ projects that, the company claims, “produces a higher quality oil product, reduces the cost of accessing challenging reservoirs, and cuts GHG emissions dramatically.
